Woodworking Machine Modernisation

The brief. Solutions for the wood industry live or die on productivity and availability — and a [furniture / panel-processing manufacturer — CONFIRM client name] was losing both to an ageing control system. Their CNC woodworking machine (router / panel-processing centre) ran obsolete drives and controller with no spares route; positioning had drifted, changeovers between parts were slow and manual, and an unplanned control failure threatened days of downtime. The mechanics were sound; the electronics were the risk.

What we did. Automation Republic modernised the machine's controls end to end. We re-engineered the axes as closed-loop servo motion for accurate, repeatable positioning and clean cut quality, replaced the obsolete drives and controller, and built a new, documented panel in our in-house shop. A recipe touchscreen HMI now stores every part program, turning a changeover into a screen tap rather than a manual set-up, and machine data — cycle counts, faults, availability — is surfaced to the operator. Where the design benefited from it, motion was proven in simulation before it ran on the machine.

The platform. The rebuild was standardised on B&R — ACOPOS servo, X20 I/O, POWERLINK and Automation Studio — for premium, coordinated motion, with VEICHI drives available where a cost-optimised solution suits the duty. The architecture stays vendor-flexible: Siemens, Rockwell or Mitsubishi can anchor the build to match an existing fleet. Guarding and interlocks were brought up to current safety standards.

The result. The machine returned to full, reliable production — better positioning accuracy, faster changeovers, higher availability — on a modern, supportable platform with spares secured. The customer owns the as-built drawings, motion and HMI code, and operator training; support is backed locally and by VPN remote diagnostics for fast tuning and updates.
